About The Holiday Tradition

Thomas and Beatrice Penn built their estate, called Chinqua Penn Plantation, in the 1920s with the idea of grandly entertaining friends, family and business associates. The current owners of the Rockingham County estate will continue the tradition this holiday season by hosting the annual Holiday and Candlelight Tours from Nov. 27 to Jan. 3.

At least 13 theme-decorated Christmas trees will be scattered throughout the 27-room mansion, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Included will be a 14-foot live North Carolina Fraser fir in the massive living room of the house. Hundreds of live poinsettias will be displayed throughout the house. Holiday lights and decorations will be installed across the 22 acres of grounds.

Lisa Phelps oversees the decorations each year. She and her husband, Calvin, bought Chinqua Penn from the state in 2006. Beatrice Penn bequeathed the estate to the 16-campus University of North Carolina system in 1959.

August - Egyptian Experience

Chinqua Penn Plantation is displaying an exciting exhibit of ancient Egyptian artifacts as well as a replica of the golden Throne chair of King Tut-ankh-amen (King Tut) the famous 9-year-old Egyptian king.

In 1929, while on world tour, Jeff and Betsy Penn commissioned E. Hautoun of Cairo, Egypt to have this chair reproduced.  Other pieces include a faience necklace, an ivory fail, and a 1600 BC bronze figure of Horus, son of Osiris.  There will be several other exciting pieces to view.

Chinqua Penn provides a multicultural experience and represents artifacts from thirty or more countries.

The exhibit can be seen August 1 through August 30.  Please check under the "Special Events" tab for more exciting exhibits to come.

House tour admission is $20 for adults and $15 for seniors/students, $10 youth age 6-15, age five and under are free.  For more information contact Amy Huber at 336-349-4576.

April - The Art of Tile: Behind the Scenes

Special Tour

There is always something new to explore or discover at Chinqua Penn, but this Spring Season we are pleased to offer a totally new tour offering.

Tour Lasts Through April Only
Saturdays at 11 am and 2 pm
Sundays at 2 pm.

Come join us for a special behind the scenes tile tour of both the inside and out of this magnificent home, where you have a chance to explore the history and art in some rarely seen areas of Chinqua Penn Plantation.

Jeff and Betsy Penn’s 1920’s displays of tile work at Chinqua Penn are wide ranging from the whimsical and exotic to the practical and aesthetic. While Jeff was building his mansion, he advised contractors that he personally would be selecting tiles for the home. During his travels in Europe he spoke of his plans, commenting:

“thro the front door you gaze and want to go to this peaceful place---its floor and walls are made of clean, cool, colorful tile.”

The Penn’s left behind an exception record of turn of the century decorating. Its tile work is still primarily in its original location throughout Chinqua Penn.

Available for a limited time during April 2009 Spring Revival Season, the tour will last approximately 1 ½  hours and covers entirely new material throughout the house as well as the pagoda and items long stored in basement.  Rates for this special tour are $30 adult; $25 Senior/Student/Military; $20 youth (6 – 16).

Tour size is limited due to the close nature of some of the areas on the tour. Advance tickets are available on-line at chinquapenn.com or by calling 336-349-4576.

Tour times in April are each Saturday at 11 am and 2 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.

Group tours are  available by appointment.
