African Experience Exhibit, Feb 1 - Mar 1

Penn's African Experience on Exhibit at Chinqua Penn

Beginning February 1, 2009, Chinqua Penn Plantation & Vineyards, at 2138 Wentworth Street in Reidsville, N.C., the public is invited to view the display of African artifacts that the Penns collected during their early travel.

Jeff and Betsy Penn made two trips to Africa.  The first in 1933 took the Penns through North Africa.  Then in 1937, a trip on the SS Guilio Cesare, described as the South African Express", took them through Dakar (in Senegal), Swaziland, Victoria Falls (in present day Zimbabwe), and South Africa.

In their travels many artifacts were purchased and shipped back home.  And of course many stories were told of their adventures.  Jeff told the most inspiring.  He asked a young boy "if you can tell me where God is I'll give you an orange."  The boy replied, "if you can tell me where he is not I will give two oranges."

Artifacts on display will include an African drum, a Zulu warrior shield and a spear as well as other items not regularly on exhibit.

The exhibit will run from February 1 through March 1.  Please check our web site www.chinquapenn.com under the events link for more exciting things to come.

House tour admission is $20 for adults and $15 for seniors/students with college ID, $10 youth age 6-15, and age five & under are free.  For more information call 336-349-4576.
